New Minister should consult experts on Tarkine

Australian Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson said today that Environment Minister Mark Butler should be spending time in Tasmania talking to experts on the endangered species under threat by Tarkine mine proposals.

"The failure of Minister Butler's predecessor to fully consider official conservation advice on endangered species was the basis of the court decision against Shree's proposed mine at Nelson Bay River," said Senator Peter Whish-Wilson.

"As a new Environment Minister thrown into a critical role by his own party's upheaval surely his first priority in travelling to Tasmania would be to meet with experts on the endangered species under threat?

"What experts on the Tasmanian devils, Tasmanian Wedge Tailed Eagle, or other endangered species did Minister Butler meet today so he can understand the delicate and complex nature of this rare ecosystem?

"From reports Minister Butler spent most of his time today in Tasmania meeting with the vested interests behind the mine that threatens these natural values or with members of his own political party shoring up their vote for upcoming elections.

"Minister Butler must not repeat the mistakes of his predecessor, Minister Burke, if Tasmanians and North West tourism operators are to have any certainty about protecting the internationally recognised wilderness and long term economic value of the Tarkine Brand," Senator Whish-Wilson concluded.
