Greens demand investigation into Western Sydney Airport offsets scandal

The Greens say an investigation is needed into the offsets for the Western Sydney Airport, after revelations that consortiums including advisors to the NSW government made millions from the development.

An investigation by Lisa Cox at The Guardian revealed that over a quarter of all offsets sold in the NSW scheme were collected by the consortiums.

Morrison's hydrogen spin is just more cash for coal & gas

As the Prime Minister pins all his hopes on technology to save his government’s complete lack of any climate policy, his financial commitment doesn’t match up to his marketing.

In the wake of President Biden’s announcement of a $2 trillion climate infrastructure package, Scott Morrison has proposed a $539 million hydrogen and CCS hub spend to spruik his low emissions technology strategy, 3700x less in total and 290x less per capita than the Biden administration.

Greens legislate to keep Snowy clean

Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, will introduce a Bill into the House of Representatives that would prevent the government using the Snowy Hydro group to build new gas-fired power stations. The Bill will be seconded by Independent MP, Zali Steggall.

Energy and Emissions Reduction Minister Angus Taylor has given the NSW market until the end of April 2021 to make final investment decisions on 1000 MW of new dispatchable capacity to replace Liddell or he says he will direct Snowy Hydro to invest in a new gas-fired power station in the Hunter.

Morrison, Andrews have dropped ball on Yallourn

Adam Bandt 10 Mar 2021

The Greens have responded to the early closure of Yallourn by 2028 by slamming the Federal and State governments’ refusal to legislate a clear timetable for all coal closures by 2030 and establish proper transition authorities, saying Liberal and Labor’s unwillingness to plan a coal phase-out has left workers and communities in the lurch.

For too long, the state and federal governments have taken a backseat with the coal power station’s impending closure, despite years of advocacy from the Greens and environmental groups calling for a planned transition.

Morrison has no power on gas prices - but he could help Australians with energy bills

Nick McKim 22 Jan 2021

The Greens have attacked the Prime Minister’s attempted spin on domestic gas reservation, pointing out that it will have no impact on Australian consumers.

AEMO estimates that gas resources from new basins (such as Narrabri and the Beetaloo) will likely cost between $7.28-$9.87 per GJ to extract. When you consider that gas companies aren’t going to sell at a loss, Scott Morrison’s goal to keep new gas for Australian industry below $6 per GJ is clearly absurd.

Failure of Chevron's Gorgon Project shows carbon capture is an expensive myth

Nick McKim 16 Jan 2021

The failure of Chevron’s Gorgon carbon capture and storage project is a symbol of the total failure of the CCS industry, the Greens have said today, calling for the federal money wasted on the project to be returned.

New reporting shows the project was years behind schedule, over budget, and rapidly slowing down carbon storage rates as the $180bn corporation struggles to figure out how to inject millions of tonnes of gas below the ground.

Coalition and Labor light the fuse on Beetaloo gas bomb

The Greens have slammed the Liberals and Labor for today throwing $217 million in road funding to enable the Beetaloo Basin gas project, saying the funding would worsen the climate crisis and result in a stranded asset as our trading partners abandon gas.

"The Coalition and NT Labor are in lock step in their plan to light the fuse on the Beetaloo climate bomb,” Acting Greens Leader Nick McKim said.

"If your plan for the future includes fracking a massive gas mine for 70 years, there's no mincing words - you're a climate denialist.

Murray-Darling report gives Morrison ultimatum: crops or coal?

Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, says a new report on the impact of global warming on the Murray-Darling makes the fork in the road crystal clear.

“If Scott Morrison doesn’t accept we’re in a climate emergency and start phasing out coal and gas, nothing will save the Murray-Darling,” Bandt said.

“The Prime Minister must choose between crops or coal, because we can’t have both.

“Scott Morrison is failing to protect Australia’s farmers.

“Scott Morrison’s coal-hugging and climate-denial is threatening Australia’s ability to feed itself.
