At the Australian Greens National Conference last weekend, the Australian Greens moved and passed a motion declaring a climate emergency, and a motion calling on people to join in the September 20 climate strike. Greens Deputy Leader and climate change and energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP said it was now time for other parties and parliaments across Australia to join the Greens by demonstrating their unequivocal recognition of the scale of the crisis facing us.

TAYLOR'S 'OPEN MIND' ON NUCLEAR ENERGY IS FRIGHTENING: BANDT

Greens climate change and energy spokesperson and Acting Leader, Adam Bandt MP, today said that Angus Taylor’s apparent refusal to convene the COAG energy council is more evidence that this government does not care about climate action whatsoever.
 
“The Minister for Emissions Reduction doesn’t want to reduce emissions,” said Mr Bandt.
 
“The government has no energy policy and no climate policy because it doesn’t actually care about climate change.
 

The Greens have called for the process to select a nuclear waste site to be halted, and an independent, expert panel to take over, amid deep concerns about the sidelining of the community and Traditional Owners.

“Today’s revelations that Kimba is the preferred site for an expanded nuclear waste dump are deeply troubling,” Greens nuclear spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“The entire process has been badly botched from the start, with community concerns ignored and the Adnyamathanha and Barngarla people sidelined.

Senior South Australian Liberals must clarify whether Tony Pasin’s push to underwrite coal-fired power is part of the Liberals’ plan for our renewables state.

“Liberal Barker MP Tony Pasin went on radio this morning calling for taxpayer money to be spent on new coal-fired power stations. Senior South Australian Liberals must clarify whether this is their new position,” Greens Senator for South Australia Sarah Hanson-Young said.

If Labor fast tracks Adani, the Greens will strike in the inner city: Bandt

Greens Deputy Leader and spokesperson for climate change and energy Adam Bandt MP today warned Labor against fast tracking Adani. Not only will this put lives at risk by making climate change worse, but Labor would be putting at risk inner-city seats in Brisbane and Melbourne.

“If Queensland Labor misreads the election results and starts hugging coal even tighter, voters in the inner city will punish Labor and shift to the Greens,” said Mr Bandt.

Garrett’s right on climate emergency, the beds are burning: Bandt

Greens climate change and energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today backed former Labor Minister Peter Garrett’s call for an incoming Labor government to declare and act on the climate emergency.

“The beds are burning and Peter Garrett is right,” said Mr Bandt.

“A million species are at risk of extinction and our world is sinking, burning and drowning simultaneously. Our government needs to respond.

“The climate emergency requires an emergency response, not business as usual.

Greens will move to declare ‘climate emergency’ in next Parliament following UK Parliament climate emergency declaration

Greens climate and energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP has welcomed the UK Parliament’s declaration of a climate and environment emergency. Mr Bandt said the Greens would seek to move and pass a similar motion as soon as possible in the new Parliament after the election.

“The UK Parliament has recognised the world is facing an existential climate crisis and that we all need to act urgently,” Mr Bandt said.
