Chinese government must allow access to Tibet, Greens say

Following reports of a mass forced-labour program in Tibet, Greens Senator Janet Rice has called on the Chinese Government to allow access to the region so journalists and officials can look into these allegations.

PM must strip Abbott’s pension if reported foreign ties are true

Greens Leader, Adam Bandt, has said Scott Morrison must strip Tony Abbott of his Prime Ministerial pension, if reports are correct that Abbott is now on the payroll of the British government.

“If these reports are true, Tony Abbott's job is now to promote another country, even if it means disadvantaging Australian farmers, producers and exporters,” said Mr Bandt.

"Scott Morrison has said Tony Abbott is a 'good hire' and he must immediately clarify the nature of the former PM's arrangement with the UK government.

Greens call on Morrison Government to take action over Hong Kong National Security Law

The Australian Greens condemn in the strongest possible terms the Chinese Government’s decision to override Hong Kong’s legislature and pass draconian national security laws aimed at repressing the people of Hong Kong.

The Greens also called on the Morrison Government to, at an absolute minimum and as a first step, grant permanent protection for all Hong Kongers who currently reside in Australia.

Morrison must call out Trump’s moves towards fascism

Leader of the Australian Greens, Adam Bandt MP, has today called on Prime Minister Scott Morrison to stop being subservient to Donald Trump and instead call out his moves towards fascism and support of white supremacy.

“In the United States they are assaulting Australian journalists, teargassing peaceful protestors for a presidential photo-op and Donald Trump is threatening to use the military against his own people, but Scott Morrison is silent,” Mr Bandt said.

US Marine Rotational Force must not go ahead in order to protect Territorians

Australian Greens Peace and Disarmament spokesperson Senator Jordon Steele-John has expressed deep concern that the United States Marine Rotational Force will be going ahead in Darwin in early June.

“All military cooperation with the United States in Australia must cease while the threat of COVID-19 remains high to protect people in the the Northern Territory, including First Nations Communities and Australian Forces who would ordinarily be undertaking shared activities with US Troops based in the Top End,” Steele-John said.

Australian Greens condemn attempts to ratchet up repression in Hong Kong

The Australian Greens condemn the Chinese Government’s plans to enact sweeping new national security laws in Hong Kong, with Leader of the Australian Greens Adam Bandt today offering solidarity to protesters who have resisted months of recriminations.

“As Hong Kong activists have said, this is a dangerous prospect for Hong Kong and if implemented could be a knockout blow for Hong Kong’s one country, two systems arrangement.  It is an attempt to silence Hong Kong and its brave and vocal pro-democracy activists," Mr Bandt said.

Greens welcome ICC Chief Prosecutor's announcement on Palestine

The Australian Greens welcome the recent announcement by the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court that she believes the court has jurisdiction in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem and Gaza, so that it can investigate war crimes allegedly committed in Palestine since 2009.

“Australia appears to have found itself on the wrong side of international law in arguing that the court doesn’t have jurisdiction in Palestine," Greens Leader and Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Adam Bandt said.

Greens urge Australian Government to intervene in case of Australian citizen detained in China

The Australian Greens condemn in the strongest terms the Chinese Government’s decision to formally indict Australian citizen Dr Yang Hengjun on espionage charges.

Leader of the Greens and foreign policy spokesperson Adam Bandt said the Australian Government had an important role to play in securing his freedom, and with charges now laid, the window of opportunity to get him free may be closing.

“The first duty of any government should be to keep its people safe, and while the government may be distracted, Dr Yang doesn’t have any time to spare,” Mr Bandt said.
