Greens say Coalition naysayers should stop blocking Australia’s electric vehicle future

The Turnbull Government needs to get its house in order and drive Australia’s electric vehicle future, or risk being left behind the rest of the world, say the Australian Greens.

“Australia is a global laggard when it comes to low-pollution transport, and it’s time for real action to drive the uptake of electric vehicles”, said Senator Janet Rice, Australian Greens transport spokesperson.

Greens amendment calling for mandatory vehicle emissions and encouraging uptake of electric vehicles passes Senate

The Greens have today successfully amended the Government’s Liquid Fuel Emergency Bill to call on the Government to reduce Australia’s oil consumption.

Part of Australia’s international obligations under the International Energy Agency is to ensure we have 90 days worth of liquid fuel stocks. Australia has not met this obligation for over half a decade.

Governments favour private toll companies over the public, say the Greens

Australian Greens transport spokesperson, Senator Janet Rice, has said that Transurban’s record profit released yesterday, with a $187 million surge in one year, shows that they have been given too good a deal by the federal and state governments, at the expense of the toll-paying public.

 

“Transurban’s bumper profit surge demonstrates they’ve essentially been given a license to print money by governments at the expense of regular Australians who are already struggling with cost of living pressures,” said Senator Janet Rice.

“This report shows just how far Australia is falling behind on electric vehicle ownership, with electric vehicles making up only 0.1% of the new car sales market,” said Senator Rice.

Senate backs Whyalla steelworks future

The Senate has supported an Australian Greens’ motion calling on the Federal Government to use Whyalla steel in local infrastructure projects announced in this year’s budget.

“This motion sends a message to the steelworkers in Whyalla doing it tough that Canberra is watching and the Greens are determined to do what we can to help get them back on their feet,” Greens trade spokesperson, Senator for South Australia Sarah Hanson-Young said.
