The Australian Greens have today released their Kimberley Vision Paper, which sets out a future for the Kimberley that puts people and the environment ahead of exploitative industrialisation.

"The decisions about the future of the Kimberley need to be made by the community, governments have limited understanding of the potential and the limitations of the region so must listen to the community," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens Kimberley spokesperson said today.

The Australian Greens said today that critical investment in communities and infrastructure in Northern Australia needs to be based on clean, green industries, not a short term rush to exploitative resource development and unsustainable intensive agriculture.

"Northern Australia deserves a future of responsible and long term investment, not one of exploitation," Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

Three Australian Greens Senators are visiting Broome and the Kimberley this week to host a community forum and discuss alternatives to the threat of industrialisation, which continues to loom over the region.

WA Greens Senators Rachel Siewert and Scott Ludlam have been joined by Greens environment spokesperson Senator Larissa Waters for the visit, which will include a public forum, meetings with community members and a flyover visit of shale gas wells, a new threat to the local environment.

Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam is proud to stand with Traditional Owners to protect the world's largest pre-Ice Age rock art precinct in the Pilbara, 1550 km north of Perth.

"The Burrup Peninsula is a place of unparalleled artistic, cultural, religious and historical significance, as well as a place of magnificent natural beauty," said Senator Ludlam.

"The Greens have long campaigned for its protection, mostly recently through the Too Precious To Lose campaign.

Colin Barnett's bitter obsession with James Price Point must end, the WA Greens said today.

Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam said the State Government's plan to acquire the land despite huge local opposition to its industrialisation and Woodside's withdrawal was "vindictive and reckless".

"Premier Barnett, please - it's over. This is a pristine part of the Kimberley's coast; it was never appropriate for industrialisation and it never will be. The Premier is now standing in the way of progress. It's time to move on," said Senator Ludlam.

The Australian Greens said today that WA Premier Colin Barnett cannot walk away from investing in Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley simply because of Woodside’s decision to cancel development the James Price Point LNG precinct.

“The Greens have been staunch opponents of this proposed gas hub and the fact that it was tied so closely to the provision of better services and supports for Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley,” Senator Siewert said today.

Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert has welcomed the announcement that the development of a gas hub at James Price Point has been abandoned, saying the decision represents great news for the people, culture and environment of the Kimberley.

“The development of a gas hub at James Price Point would have destroyed irreplaceable environmental, cultural, social and heritage values. It has been a divisive and contentious issue for people across the region over a number of years,” Senator Siewert said from the Kimberley today.

Reports that Woodside is shelving its planned Browse gas project at James Price Point could signal a big win for the Kimberley and the environment alike, the Greens said today.

"These are very encouraging reports and it is important that Woodside and the WA Government announce the decision, if it has been made," Senator Rachel Siewert said.

A new report on whale numbers at James Price Point shows that Woodside has grossly underestimated the number of whales using the area, and that the science that informed the impact assessment is flawed.

“The potential impact of a gas hub at James Price Point on the vulnerable humpback whales that use the area has not been adequately assessed and is far higher than the company wants people to believe,” Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson for the Kimberley said today.
