Greens launch plan to protect lutruwita/Tasmania’s forests

The Greens have today launched a plan to protect lutruwita/Tasmania’s forests for future generations and for a safe climate, all while ensuring new job opportunities.

With states across Australia ending native logging, it’s clear the writing is on the wall for Tasmania’s native forest logging industry. The IPCC tells us our forests are the first line of defence against climate change and must be protected. Native forest logging is destroying biodiversity and undermining climate action, and consumers are waking up to the damage.

Forestry sector needs reform, not expansion

The Greens have called for an end to native forest logging in addition to plantation forestry reform following the Morrison Government’s announcement today about increasing its self-reliance on wood supply.

Quotes attributable to Greens Senator for lutruwita/Tasmania, Peter Whish-Wilson:

“It’s no surprise that the Liberal Party is announcing another taxpayer-subsidised lifeline to support the loss-making forestry industry in Tasmania prior to an election.

Mount Roland Cable Car

The Tasmanian government is continuing to privatise public land through its secretive expressions of interest process, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.

“The first-stage approval of the Mount Roland cable car is effectively a sell-off and lock up of one of the most precious and beautiful parts of our state,” Senator McKim said.

“The Liberals have learned nothing from the backlash over Lake Malbena, and want to push ahead with their secretive process.”

“Tasmania’s reserves, national parks and the TWWHA are not theirs to sell.”

Greens spokesperson for Finance, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, today called on Tasmanian Liberal Senators to provide federal assistance for TasWater’s infrastructure upgrade program.

The budget shows payments to the states are set to fall from $9 billion to $4 billion over the next four years.

Final Budget of Abbott-Turnbull government lays bare the economic policy failures for Tasmania

Greens Senator for Tasmania, Peter Whish-Wilson, says that last night’s Federal Budget is an admission of failure by the Liberals to deliver for Tasmania's economy.

“First the Government wound up their $6.5 million employment incentive aimed at attracting 2000 jobs; it ending up employing just 160 people.

“The Cadbury’s $15 million grant was a farce from beginning to end. A cent of the money has been yet to be spent despite the Government’s term effectively being over.

Turnbull’s new tax plan is terrible for Tasmania

Greens Finance spokesperson and Senator for Tasmania, Peter Whish-Wilson, provides the following comments on the Prime Minister’s latest thought bubble to pass income tax powers to the states.

Senator Whish-Wilson said, “Tasmania has the oldest and lowest-paid workforce in the nation. Our unemployment rate is the second highest in the country and our employment participation rate is the outright lowest. Combined with the lowest population growth in the country, this leaves Tasmania with a massive revenue burden that will only worsen in time.
